From socialisation to cognitive learning – Why it should be part of your child’s early education at crèche and nursery school

When childcare professionals talk about early childhood development, what they’re really focusing on is supporting how your child learns. This is because critical skills and neurological pathways are built in the time from birth to about 5 years old – and it is these developments which set the foundation for learning through school into adulthood. Generally, these areas of development are categorised into four categories, namely:

  1. Motor skills development: This includes gross and fine motor skills development. Gross motor skills require the body’s larger muscles to be exercised to perform activities such as walking, running, crawling, sitting, standing or balancing. Fine motor skills include more refined, detail-orientated activities such as eating, drawing, playing, writing and getting dressed.
  2. Language skills: This skillset enables verbal and non-verbal communication (body language). Children learn to express themselves creatively and clearly as well as to recognise an understand communication from those around them.
  3. Cognitive skills: Learning, problem solving, reasoning and memory are the result of developing cognitive skills. These are essential for future academic and career performance.
  4. Social-emotional skills: Good relationships with friends, family and teachers, teamwork, leadership and the development of empathy are signs that these skills are present in a child.
