How much sleep should your child be getting?

Everyone knows what it feels like not to get enough sleep. We get cranky, find it difficult to concentrate and even the simplest tasks can feel like they require just too much effort – and kids are exactly the same! What’s more, sleeping isn’t just about feeling refreshed, it’s critical for brain development and growth. So how much sleep is enough? Our child care specialists near Parkmore weigh in.

Newborns (0-3 months): At this age, children are still developing their Circadian rhythm, the cycle that means we sleep at night and stay awake in the day. This means that they can sleep from 10-18 hours a day on an irregular schedule, usually with 1-3 hours of awake time following their nap. Fussing, rubbing their eyes and crying can all mean it’s time for bed.

Infants (4-11 months): This is a transition phase and by 6 months many infants will be sleeping through the night without requiring night-time feedings. This generally means that they sleep 9-12 hours a night followed by 30 minute-2 hour naps in the day one to four times a day. This should decrease as they get closer to their first birthday.

Toddlers (1-2 years): At this age, your child needs 11-14 hours of sleep per day. Naps are generally once a day and often last 1-3 hours. Naps shouldn’t be too close to the evening as this can make it difficult for your child to fall asleep at night. This is also a common time for your child to experience nightmares.

Young children (3-5 years): Sleeping patterns at this age usually include a full night’s sleep of 11-13 hours and naps generally stop around 5 years of age. Sleepwalking and nightmares are very common at this age, as well as difficulty falling asleep and/or waking up.

One of the best ways to help your child get the right amount of sleep is to develop a bedtime routine. With the right bed time and setting the stage with a bath, story time or other calming activities, your child will help develop those essential healthy sleeping patterns.
