Teething tips from our day care centre near Parkmore

If your baby of around 6 months old is trying to chew on everything in sight, has a normal temperature and is experiencing more diaper rash than normal, chances are that you are about to celebrate his or her first tooth! Teething can be a great source of irritation to your little one, but luckily there are several ways of treating this in the comfort of your home:

  • Soothing cold: Cold things like a refrigerated pacifier or even a very cold, clean wet washcloth will give some relief. If your baby has started eating solids, a cold large carrot works wonders – but he or she should be supervised at all times while eating it as chunks of carrot can be a choking hazard.
  • Pressure: This also helps a lot, so if your baby doesn’t like the cold, offer him or a teething toy. There are all sorts of teething toys out there, so if your little one doesn’t like one, try another – there are even some great vibrating ones! If you don’t have one on hand, rub your baby’s gums with your finger. It will make a squeaky sound and the pressure is very soothing.
  • Teething gels: These are topical anaesthetics that will leave your baby’s gums numbed for about 20 minutes. They are ideal if nothing else is working but they shouldn’t be used too often. If you are breastfeeding, avoid using it for about 30 minutes before feeding your baby, as it will make it difficult for your baby to feed.
  • Painkillers: There are some painkillers that are suitable for teething babies – but be sure to check with your doctor before giving your little one anything, as their recommendation is best! This is a real last resort for babies that are in a lot of pain as there can be some side effects like an upset tummy.
  • A healthy distraction: Babies that are in pain from teething get stressed and frustrated – especially at night when there are few distractions! Soothing music, a warm bath, a gentle massage or even just cuddles with mom and dad can make a huge difference, even when combined with the above treatments!

Teething is a difficult time for babies and their parents, so remember to try take time to relax and de-stress – after all, a relaxed parent is the perfect way to calm an unhappy baby!
